Richmont Street Team volunteers at Richmond Craft Mafia Bada Bing show

As you probably know Richmond Craft Mafia had recently its amazing Baba Bing show in Richmond, VA. A few of Richmond Street team members volunteered to spread the word about Etsy at the show. Etsy had a separate table right at the entrance so that practically nobody could escape it. It was much fun to talk to all potential buyers and find out what they actually know and think about Etsy.

It turns out Richmonders know a lot about Etsy! Most of the people who visited the show were interested in learning more about local Etsy shops which is good news for all of us! All but one person knew about Etsy and quite a few confessed that they are actually addicted to it! All the things we learned from talking to people at the show were invaluable and we had great time sharing our personal Etsy experiences!

We had lists where everyone could write down her/his e-mail address and quite a few people did just that. It turns out that many people who are regular craft show visitors are Etsy buyers as well. Almost all of them shop at local shops on Etsy.

The Buyer's Market of American Craft & RVA Street Team Recap

The Richmond Etsy Street Team participated in the Etsy Teams program at the Buyer's Market of American Craft for the second year this past August. Several Richmond Street Team Members who, in addition to selling on Etsy, sell their work to shops and galleries planned and organized their wares into one big booth at the Buyer's Market in Baltimore. There were a number of other Etsy Street Teams at the Market, including New York, Baltimore and DC. We had a great time, took some orders, spent time with friends, learned a lot (good & bad) and ate some yummy food!

I just came across the following promo link on Etsy . The idea is to submit 10 items representing our team. We are free to chose any 10 items from our team shops. I think it's a good way for our team to promote itself in the upcoming holiday season.

I suggest all the interested REST shops leave a comment with an URL link for the item they would like to submit. I think it's fair to submit one item per a REST member so that everyone gets a chance to win a spot. Even if you have 5 shops I think it's fair to submit just one item.

The deadline for submission is tomorrow September 22nd at 12:00pm (noon).

I'll run a True Random Number Generator to select 10 items.

This marks the first installment of (hopefully) many itsy-bitsy interviews of the wonderful members of REST.

I had the honor of getting to know Janice Alexander of JKA Designs. Go ahead and give a peek at her store and blog!

How did you first become interested in jewelry design & crafting?

I started my company, JKA Designs, Inc., as a graphics design artist on the computer for local corporations and printers. Seeking a break from the computer (after many years on it) and a way to express my creativity in a different way is what led me in the direction of creating sterling silver jewelry and fused glass pieces.

What are your major inspirations?

When I am not in my studio I spend a lot of time in my flower garden so most of my inspirations come from nature in my kiln-formed glass pieces and my silver work. The different forms of nature … shapes, textures, beautiful colors of flowers, birds, and even the insects are what inspire my pieces.

What are your favorite materials?

My two favorite mediums to work with are sterling silver and fused glass.

It is so personally satisfying to take a flat sheet of silver and hand forge it into a piece of jewelry. I love working with tools … hammers, saws, my rolling mill, and of course my torch! I feel just as passionate about working with glass.

What advice do you have for people who wish to get into jewelry designing & making?

Just go for it! Experiment and play around with different mediums until you find the one you are most passionate about.

My journey in creating jewelry began with designing beaded necklaces and earrings and creating wire wrapped jewelry. Then I played around with Precious Metal Clay for a little while which led me to trying metalsmithing. While I was on vacation one year I saw my first piece of fused dichroic glass. Absolutely fell in love with it, gorgeous sparkling colors! So when we got home, I did a lot of research on fused glass, bought a small kiln, some books, and started fusing glass. I have even tried making lamp work beads.

Although I liked working in all of the different mediums I experimented with along my journey, my passions are forging silver and kiln-formed glass. I still do some beading because I love the colors and textures of natural stones.

So my advice would be to find the medium you love to work in, enjoy your journey getting there, have fun along the way learning new things, and love what you do!

Wanna get in good with The Boss?

We need a few good volunteers for Spring Bada-Bing, Sunday, April 18th at Plant Zero! Volunteers will do things like help vendors unload/load their cars, help shoppers find their way around, pass out programs, and generally help us keep things running smoothly. You can stay for part of the day or all day long.

Volunteers get a free swag bag full of the best goodies and promos as well as our never-ending love and affection.

Morning Volunteers are needed to help folks unload and setup in the morning, between 8am and 10am. We will have a large number of vendors trying to get into a somewhat car-challenged space, and need some active, early-risers to keep things moving.

Show Volunteers are needed from 10am - 4pm to assist customers, pass out programs, deliver vendor lunches, etc.

Take-Down Volunteers are needed from 3:30pm - 5pm to help vendors pack up and to clean up the facility.

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond is looking for indie craft vendors who focus on recycling, repurposing, upcycling and reuse of materials…If your work incorporates any of these words, WE WANT YOU to apply to Art:24, a decidedly un-stuffy 24-hour celebration of hands, community, crafts, food and fun.

We expect a large crowd for this event, and we will be widely advertising around Richmond. Events of the day include:

• Workshops, talk, book signing and trunk show with international design star and sustainable fashion guru Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin.
• A lively casual party with storytelling and live music, highlighting collaborative wearable art and beautiful hand-made pieces and featuring a silent auction and cash bar. Tickets will be $24 for adults and $12 for students.
• An assortment of light-hearted, hands-on activities for all ages, including opportunities to make and decorate clothing and embellishments.
• Fun and informal food, from a traditional Southern breakfast to a cake-and-champagne finale.

Art:24 is a fundraiser for the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, and we will being incorporating a silent auction into the event. If you would like to donate an item that is worth at least $25 to the auction, we would gladly discount your booth fee!

Booth Space: You must provide your own 6 foot table, and be able to use it as your sole display. Larger displays cannot be accommodated. One central, single person bathroom will be available as a dressing room, if needed. Electricity is not available.

We have a new home for the craft lounge. Jenny, the lovely owner of Richmond's first sewing lounge Fleur Fabric Boutique, has graciously offered us space for our next monthly get together.

Come join us at 119 N Robinson St (next to Halcyon's) from 7:00 - 9:00 pm this Monday September 8th.

The organized craft will be button pendants and badges. We'll supply plastic canvas, wire and pin backs. Please bring buttons, cutters, a folding chair if you have one and your imagination. Fleur Fabrics has a great selection of vintage buttons and some bakelite starting at only .10 cent each!

This year the Richmond Craft Mafia and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond are teaming up to present the Handmade Holiday Craft Show , an exciting new holiday shopping event for Richmond.

The Richmond Craft Mafia has put on their Handmade Holiday Trunk Show since 2005, but the show only consisted of work by Richmond Craft Mafia members. This new collaboration with the Visual Art Center will expand the show to include other crafters and designers from the Richmond area.

The show will be held at the newly renovated and expanded Visual Arts Center of Richmond (formerly the Hand Workshop) on Main Street. The juried show will take place on Saturday - December 13th from 10 - 5, with a Preview Party the night before, December 12th from 7 - 10 pm.

Bizarre Market at Joe's Inn! That's right, Joe's Inn!

There will be a very special Bizarre Market this Saturday August 9th from 11-4 pm on the 200 block of North Shields (outside of JOE'S INN).

This market will be held in conjunction with ART 180's Jonny Z Festival during which they
will be unveiling the mural project they have been working on.

Richmond's most eclectic arts & crafts & oddities sale.
The Bizarre Market fills up Randolph Street with an
average of 25-40 vendors who sell everything from
paintings, knit clothing, retro clothing, prints, jewelry,
photographs, haircuts, new shoes, bottles of water,
and household goods. This particular market will focus
on all of these items, but we are encouraging all Spring
Cleaners to bring out yard sale and household products.

It is always free for vendors to set up, and we welcome
anyone with legal items to sell. We do ask that each vendor
donates 10% of the day's sales to our selected non-profit,
Books On Wheels. In return, BOW will be present with
the bus, fixing bikes and giving away books.

Next week, Rob, Matt, Anda, and Julie will be traveling down to Richmond, Virginia to participate in a specialized symposium at Virginia Commonwealth University in conjunction with the American Craft Council, VCU, and Quirk Gallery. A three-part symposia of the American Craft Council

The American Craft Council is pleased to announce the debut of a traveling program series, dedicated to exploring the next generation of craft artists and their burgeoning influence in the market and culture. The symposia will engage students, faculty, alumni and the public at three of the nation’s leading schools for craft media, and seeks to motivate curricular innovation, reveal student/alumni hopes and needs, and develop a future audience for the craft field.

The April 3rd event, developed in partnership with VCU’s Craft/Material Studies department, will feature Rob Kalin, president and founder of Etsy, your place for buying and selling all things handmade, in conversation with Sonya Clark, chair of the Craft/Material Studies department at VCU. They will be discussing the impact of the internet on the craft market and the role of the craft gallery in a booming art market.

The symposium will kick off with a lunch-time program designed for the Senior Seminar class, giving practical information for professional artists who want to “make a living making things.” Etsy will stream the program in an Online Workshop.

It's that time of year again - Spring Bada-Bing time! The Richmond Craft Mafia is now happily accepting applications for our annual spring show. Now in it's third year, the show will be held at Plant Zero in Richmond on Sunday April 20, 2008 from 11 am - 4 pm.

OH what fun it was! Thanks to Deanna and Mary Ellen for their efforts in getting this thing off the ground...Our first CRAFT LOUNGE was a hugh success. Everyone was doodling and shrinking and dinking, it was crazy I tell ya. A big shout out to The Camel for allowing us the space to be crafty! Craft, good food and beer does it get better than that? A hugh thank you to those who came out to join us! Mark you calendar for the first Monday of next month for more crafty lounging!

Come out for a social get-together centered around all things crafty sponsored by the Richmond Craft Mafia.

There are some really cool crafts you can make from shrinky dinks. Think custom earrings, key chains, the possibilities are endless.

If shrinky dinks aren't your thing, bring your embroidery hoop, your knitting needles, your pliers and wires, or whatever and come on down. Have a coffee or a beer, and rub elbows with other local crafters. This is a great opportunity for the crafting community in our city to get together and keep growing! Cities like Portland, Detroit and Austin are well known craft meccas and Richmond Craft Mafia wants you all to help us put Richmond in those ranks! Big-Ass Book of Craft Event!

One of my favorite TV hosts and designers is coming to Richmond!!! Mark Montano will be hanging out, signing books making crafts at Tinkers on March 8th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. He is coming in celebration on his latest book The Big-Ass Book of Crafts. For a sneaky peak of what's inside the book check out his official Big-ass book site.

Speaking of making crafts with Mark you can check him out on In the Loop with i village. You get a great sense of how fun and creative Mark is! And yes Mark we do love to say BIG-ASS Book of Crafts! After school today the kids and I are so going to be making his bubbly stationary craft! Oh I can't wait! But what I really want to do is the skull plate project. I think that would be so cool with vintage apron patterns!

I know Mark from 10 years younger on TLC and from my celebrity home on the Style Network,
(which I must say I want back on the air!) but I had no idea that he wrote so many books! My crafty crush gets bigger and bigger! Big-Ass Book of Craft is just one of five, I have ordered the Big-Ass one & Dollar Store Decor.

I * Heart* Craft on Sunday was just lovely. The event had a great turnout - the members of the Richmond Craft Mafia, the Richmond Etsy Street Team and other local crafters got to meet and greet. We were able to put faces with names and even make some Valentines, too!

Follow the Directions on the page to save the banners you create (note: On my Mac I had to change the file type initials at the end of the file name manually, i.e. it said filename.php and I retyped it as filename.jpeg or else it would not upload when I tried to put it up in Your Etsy > Appearance)

One rocking Craft Swap!

Thank you all that came around to partake in our first Crafters Anonymous Craft Swap. It was a success we raised 145.00 for Art 180 and we had over 5o participants. And a huge shout out to Art Works for the great space. We could not have done it with out your support. Thank you.
